Printer Apps Explained

What manufacturer printer apps do, when you need one, and how to get the genuine app safely.

Ask Buddy Printer Guides · Reviewed

Most printer brands publish a companion app for phones and computers. These apps can be helpful, but for basic printing on current devices they are often optional.

What printer apps typically do

  • Help connect a new printer to Wi-Fi.
  • Scan documents and photos to your phone or computer.
  • Show ink or toner levels and printer status.
  • Offer printing features that the built-in print dialog doesn't.
  • Manage optional services from the manufacturer, which may involve an account.

Do you need one?

If your printer supports AirPrint or Mopria and you only need to print, your device's built-in printing may be all you need. An app becomes more useful for initial Wi-Fi setup on printers without a screen, for scanning, and for brand-specific features.

Getting the genuine app

  • Install apps only from the Apple App Store, Google Play, the Microsoft Store or the manufacturer's own website.
  • Check the developer name on the store listing matches the printer manufacturer.
  • Be cautious of websites, ads or pop-ups that offer printer "setup tools" or ask you to call a number. Printer manufacturers publish their own software and contact details on their official websites.

Accounts and permissions

Some apps ask you to create an account or allow access to your local network, Bluetooth or photos. Local network and Bluetooth access are often needed to find the printer. Read what each request is for, and the manufacturer's privacy terms, before agreeing.

Availability and setup options can vary by model, operating system, region and software version. Check the manufacturer's current documentation for model-specific requirements.
