A Pre-Purchase Compatibility Checklist

Most compatibility mistakes can be spotted before you pay. Use this checklist, and get anything uncertain confirmed in writing.

1. Identify exact models

Brand and product line aren't enough. Find the full model number of what you own and what you're considering. Small changes in a name can mean different connectors or parts.

2. Check the connection, not just the plug shape

The same-looking port can behave differently. USB-C, for example, may or may not carry video, may charge at different power levels and may run at different data speeds. Read what each end actually offers.

3. Check power

Confirm voltage and wattage requirements. A charger that fits but supplies too little power may charge slowly or not at all.

4. Check physical fit and standards

For parts such as memory and storage, the type, generation and form factor must match what your device accepts. Generations of memory are not interchangeable, and some devices limit capacity.

5. Check software and operating-system requirements

Some products need a minimum operating-system version or an app or driver that is available for your device. Look at the manufacturer's stated requirements before buying.

6. Check what you'll connect it to

Printers, monitors, docks and network equipment all depend on what's on the other end. List every device that must work with the new item, with its model.

7. Get confirmation in writing

If a detail is unclear, ask the seller or manufacturer to confirm in writing that the exact combination is supported. Only the manufacturer can confirm that for its own products.

8. Know the return terms

Even a careful check can miss something. Buy from a seller with a clear return window and know any restocking fees before you pay.
