Questions to Ask Before You Buy Technology

A few minutes with these questions can prevent most regretted purchases.

Questions for yourself

  1. What specific problem or need is this meant to solve?
  2. What do I already own that it must work with?
  3. What's my budget, including accessories and recurring costs?
  4. How long do I expect to keep it?
  5. Would a cheaper or simpler option do the job?

Questions for the seller

  1. Is this the exact model I've been researching? What's the full model number?
  2. What's included in the box, and what must I buy separately?
  3. What is the return window, and are there restocking fees?
  4. What does the warranty cover, who provides it and for how long?
  5. Does it need an account, app or paid plan to do what the listing says?

Questions about the product's future

  1. How long does the maker commit to providing updates?
  2. Can memory, storage or the battery be upgraded or replaced?
  3. Will replacement consumables such as ink, toner or filters stay available at reasonable cost?

Questions about the price

  1. Is this a typical price for this exact model, or is it unusually low?
  2. Is the lower-priced listing the same model, or a variant with different specifications?
  3. Am I buying from a seller whose return terms I can read before I pay?

If you're unsure
