Independent Product Selection Consultation

Identify products that fit your needs, budget and intended use.

What is this service?

Product Selection is a consultation that helps you work out which type of product, and which features, suit what you actually need, before you spend money. We talk through how you'll use it, what you own now and what you want to spend, then narrow the field to what's worth considering.

Examples: Laptops and desktop computers; Printers, including inkjet versus laser and running costs; Monitors; Home networking equipment; Accessories such as keyboards, docks and storage; Smart-home devices.

Most people start by comparing products. We start by comparing needs. Two people can need very different things from a "good laptop", and the right choice usually becomes obvious once the use is clear. The same goes for printers, where the way you print (rarely or daily, black and white or color, photos or documents) decides whether an inkjet, an ink-tank model or a laser printer will cost you less over its life.

We also tell you which specifications you can safely ignore. Paying for performance you won't notice is the most common way people overspend.

Who is it for?

  • First-time buyers who aren't sure where to start
  • People replacing something old who don't know what has changed

  • A plain-language explanation of which features matter for your use, and which don't
  • A shortlist of product types and specifications to look for

What to tell us

The more of this you share in your request, the more useful the consultation will be:

  • Your budget and any deadline

  • Constraints such as space, portability, or what it needs to work with

What's not included

  • Selling or supplying products, or acting for any brand or retailer
  • Repair, troubleshooting, software installation, or technical support of any kind
  • A promise that a product will meet every need or that a price will stay the same
